Louise Giovanelli is a British painter whose work explores themes of memory, perception, and the interaction between art history and contemporary visual culture. Using a repository of collected source material ranging from photographs, film stills, classical sculpture, and architectural elements, Giovanelli conjures narratively ambiguous scenes from popular culture by capturing fleeting snapshots borrowed from mass media, which she transfers to canvas with meticulous details and in luminous color.
She studied at Städelschule, Frankfurt under the tutelage of Amy Sillman, having received her BA from the Manchester School of Art. Solo exhibitions of her work have been held at Manchester Art Gallery and Workplace Foundation, Gateshead. Her work has been featured in group exhibitions that include FLAG Art Foundation, New York; Hayward Gallery, London; and AkzoNobel Art Foundation, Amsterdam.
